In life, there is a time and place for everything. Often out of our control, if we’re very lucky the definitive moments can be influenced by You and Me, sometimes even down to the hour of our choosing…

Truthfully, ‘time cares for no man’.

It is greater than us, figuratively and literally, and, sometimes harshly, has no patience for our shortsightedness or limited histories.

Legacies are a manmade concept for which this rule applies. At times developed with egocentric intention, there are rare occasions when attention must be rightfully paid, those that defy the usual conventions of man and the metaphysical; this is such a time.

In the grand scheme, YOU ME AT SIX’s score of years together might appear a drop in the ocean of eternity, yet their impact defies mere definitions of measure. From humble beginnings to a somewhat shocking (but specially self-chosen) end, they embody, and will be remembered for, so much more. YMAS are for the ages.

These performances offering Australians an opportunity to farewell one of the United Kingdom’s most beloved pop-rock exports, Welsh openers, HOLDING ABSENCE, stake a claim to wear the crown next. A royal display, this is the “third time in three years [they’ve] visited beautiful Adelaide”; wearing YMAS’s influence Like a Shadow, the heir-apparents rejoice in their predecessor’s Gravity for the second-to-last time.

Like an eclipse, producing a False Dawn that reminds us of the beauty in both nature and mimicry, Lucas Woodland’s twin appearance is enchanting. The bluejay freed from its Birdcage, metamorphosing into the hawk, the frontman’s Aching Longing swoops to unleash A Crooked Melody. Thanking “You Me At Six for inspiring us for all these years”, with promises to ‘meet you in the Afterlife’, the band Wilt into the night.

Barely Room to Breathe in yet another sold out venue across our continent, Loverboy Josh Franceschi seductively stares into every corner of the crowd, as guitarists Max Helyer & Chris Miller spin either side. Up high, bassist Matt Barnes & drummer Daniel Flint complete the quintet already frantically moving through tracks.

An occasional breath taken to Stay With Me and the crowd, it’s advised to Save It For The Bedroom later and savour the all-too fleeting moments we have left; there’s a litany of Deep Cuts in store, and more love to Give the Night People who occupy every inch of the Gov. Shifting between their own and other genre giants, YMAS remind the audience that although saying their personal goodbyes this evening, music is eternal. No Future? Yeah Right, time will change but never erase.

Together twenty years young, Franceschi appeals to the part that has grown older: “I know there are a few out there who are tired, but I’m here to celebrate one last time with all of you.” Forever capable of turning back the clock and generating Fresh Start Fever, the set Crash(es) “down on the ground” then Straight to My Head like a SUCKERPUNCH, as does the confession that “we were never supposed to come to Adelaide or Perth on this last tour, but we told the promoter, fuck that!”

Briefly realising we’ve Lived a Lie, “this is [our] night, my friends”; almost not happening, nothing more could MAKEMEFEELALIVE and No One Does It Better than YMAS. Mixed Emotions bolstered by Liquid Confidence, tears are fought back by “the most Australian ‘I love you’ ever”, knowing this is the final time we’ll Take On the World together, in such a Beautiful Way.

Heading into the encore, the finality imminent, I Bite My Tongue. With precious time left to get Reckless with the Underdogs, “five boys from England” who began as “kids only ever want[ing] to travel and to experience life … On the eve of [their] 20th anniversary as a band, now is a good time to call time”, most importantly on their own terms.

They are truly amongst the lucky ones, who by their own hands have grasped control on both the beginning and end; whose legacy has guaranteed their mark on the defining moments, between You Me At Six and forevermore.
