LIVE Review: St Vincent Brings Her A Game – Spotlight Report
A special thanks to Frontier Touring for giving The Spotlight Report the chance to see the incredible rocker St Vincent live at the Palais Theatre.
The three time Grammy award winning singer is currently embarking on a world tour for her latest album All Born Screaming. The album has gotten rave reviews from critics and is nominated for four Grammy awards including best Alternative Music Album. St Vincent hasn’t toured in Australia since 2017.
Starting the show in silhouette a hush fell over the crowd, singing Reckless from her latest album, the song slowly crescendoed into its rock centric chorus – this was an excellent way to start the show.
Unlike St Vincent’s previous tours that had an emphasis on visual effects, sets and backup singers, All Born Screaming was very stripped back. There were minimal visual effects and the show solely focussed on St Vincent and her four band mates. This made for a very raw and compelling show.
St Vincent delivered a high energy electric show from start to finish. The concert featured many songs from her latest album but also featured a collection of songs from her 8 albums. These included such iconic songs as Digital Witness, Marrow, Los Ageless, Year of the Tiger and Cheerleader. Performing these classics with a new twist was met with cheers from the audience.
St Vincent showcased her world class guitar skills and created an incredible atmosphere.
Known for her show antics, there was no crowd surfing this time around but St Vincent did create a lot of buzz by coming down into the crowd, hugging and greeting fans during her song New York.
Releasing music for nearly two decades St Vincent’s popularity continues to grow, with each album and tour becoming more daring and dynamic than the previous.
People unfamiliar with the artists would still enjoy the show and for fans of St Vincent All Born Screaming is a must watch.
St Vincent has a few more shows in Victoria, performing tonight at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat, The Forum on Wednesday and The Aviary on Thursday the 28th.
St Vincent’s musicianship, compelling songs and stage presence make for an incredible show. St Vincent lives up to her reputation as one of the most compelling and talented artists of the 21st century.
